Urban Management - Cleaning & Greening
The OBSID Cleaning and Greening team works in partnership with the City of Cape Town and the Straatwerk NGO to maintain clean, safe and well-managed public spaces for the Observatory community.
The OBSID cleaning team plays a key role in keeping Observatory clean, green and well cared for. Our responsibilities include daily litter removal, bin emptying and general weeding. All weeding is done by hand, as pesticides are not used in common areas.
The OBSID area is divided into five cleaning zones, with a dedicated team member assigned to each zone. In addition, teams work together to focus on high-foot-traffic areas and known hotspots to ensure these spaces remain clean and welcoming. Cleaning services operate seven days a week, including most public holidays.
OBSID also supports the upkeep of green spaces and parks in Observatory. While the City’s Parks Department remains responsible for maintaining park equipment, OBSID assists with the day-to-day care of green areas. With the support of the community, we are able to help maintain safe, attractive public spaces for children, families and dog walkers.
Because our teams are on the streets every day, they are well positioned to identify and report infrastructure issues such as damaged streetlights, potholes and missing or broken drain covers. These issues are logged with the City of Cape Town through the official service request platform.
OBSID maintains a strong working relationship with the City and actively follows up on service requests to support timely responses and repairs, contributing to safer, better-managed streets throughout Observatory.
