Sat, 1 December – 10h00 to 18h00
Now in its 4th year, Obs’s own community festival – Streetopia – is a day on which our community takes to the streets and brings them alive with the vibe, colour and creativity our suburb is known for. This year’s event promises to be even better and larger, with an expanded event area that will now also include a Classic & Vintage Auto show and stalls thanks to resident Hazel Walton’s much-loved Vintage Obs Day participating in an extended area of the event between Collingwood and St Michael’s Roads. All activities on the day are completely free, and all are welcome.
Driven by a collaboration between our residents, AfrikaBurn, OBSID and the Obs Civic Association, Streetopia is a one-day event where the streets are open to pedestrians and cyclists, buskers and performers – and everyone’s encouraged to add to the colour of the occasion by dressing up and participating. The event is supported by funding from AfrikaBurn, donations from Obsid and the Obs Civic Association, participating Obs businesses and a grant from the National Lotteries Commission.

Each year sees residents from Obs, Salt River, Woodstock and surrounds take up the invitation to exhibit their art and craft, host market stalls and dress up for a day of pageant. This year’s event will see a strong showing of market traders from Obs and surrounds, as well as numerous performances of on 4 small music stages and a wide spread of buskers and spontaneous street activities. As always, artworks and Mutant Vehicles from AfrikaBurn will be on display, with this year seeing large-scale artworks from AfrikaBurn 2018 being exhibited. This year will also see a range of artists creating murals in and around Lower Main Rd as part of Streetopia’s plan to leave a legacy of artworks that will make a long-lasting positive contribution to our public spaces. Also in the mix will be AfrikaBurn’s community radio station – Radio Free Tankwa – who will be broadcasting their stream throughout the day from the Village Green, providing updates on the various activities taking place.
This year’s event will take place on the Village Green and along a stretch of Lower Main Road from Norfolk Road to St Michael’s Road and runs from 10 am to 6pm on December 1st 2018. As with every year, the City of Cape Town has authorised road closures along Lower Main, and residents and businesses located in proximity to the event are provided with permits to ensure they are able to access their homes and premises on the day.
